Kids Studio! Sound & Color: Jazz-Inspired Mixed Media Camp
When: Monday through Thursday, 9:30am-12:00pm
What: Unleash your child's creativity with Kids Studio! Each 2.5-hour session is filled with hands-on artmaking, experimentation, and creative exploration.
June 29th through July 2nd: Sound & Color: Jazz-Inspired Mixed Media Camp
In this camp, students will explore the connection between music, emotion, and abstract art. Inspired by jazz and the Abstract Expressionist movement, students will learn how artists turn sound and feeling into visual art.
Students will begin by listening to different instrumental songs and creating gesture drawings that capture rhythm, movement, and emotion. We will also explore how color can symbolize feelings and how artists use abstract shapes and marks to express ideas rather than depict realistic images.
Using these drawings as inspiration, students will create mixed media collages that visually represent the music they hear and the emotions it evokes. Collages may include drawing materials, paint, textured papers, and other layered materials to build expressive compositions.
Students will practice combining multiple materials and techniques, experimenting with abstraction, and discussing how their artistic choices connect to the sounds and emotions that inspired them.
Artists we will explore: Romare Bearden, Miles Davis, Robert Thompson, Alma Woodsey Thomas, and Lee Krasner.
Who: Kids aged 7-12

About the Instructor
Hello! I'm Bella Brown, an undergraduate in the Art Education program at Virginia Commonwealth University. Much of my artistic inspiration comes from the world around me—both natural and social. Growing up in a family that loved music introduced me to a wide range of sounds and cultures, which continues to influence my art today.
Through the arts, I've developed a deep appreciation for cultures and perspectives different from my own. As a future educator, I believe it's important to help students explore creativity while also learning to appreciate the diversity of the world around them.
