Intro to Oil Painting: Painting the Oregon Landscape, 10/07/26 - 10/28/26
Painting the Oregon Landscape in Oil: A Four-Week Workshop
With Stephen Teater
Date: Wednesdays, October 7, 14, 21 & 28
Time: 6:00 - 8:00 PM
Learn the fundamentals of landscape painting in oil while creating a finished 16"x20" Oregon landscape over four weeks. No previous drawing or painting experience is necessary, though experienced artists will also find plenty to explore.
Working from a shared Oregon landscape photograph, the class will progress together through each stage of the painting process. Instructor Stephen Teater will paint the same landscape alongside the class, demonstrating each step and explaining the decisions and techniques involved. Students will then apply each stage to their own painting, with individual guidance and assistance throughout the process.
Along the way, students will explore fundamental landscape-painting concepts including value, composition, color mixing, atmospheric perspective, and the visual cues that create depth and distance.
The goal of this workshop is more than completing a single painting — students will learn a practical, repeatable approach to landscape painting they can continue to develop in the studio or take outdoors for plein-air painting.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Stephen Teater is a fine artist, illustrator, and educator based in Bend, Oregon. He teaches drawing and painting at Central Oregon Community College and has taught art classes through Bend Parks and Recreation District since 2021. He holds an MFA in Illustration from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco and a BFA from Linfield University.
His teaching combines academic foundations in drawing and painting with an emphasis on individual expression and visual communication. He believes strong technical skills give artists the freedom to make meaningful choices about how they interpret and communicate their experience.
As an artist, Teater works across painting, drawing, and illustration, drawing on observation, imagination, personal experience, and narrative. His landscape painting in particular is concerned not simply with depicting a place, but with conveying the atmosphere, emotion, and experience of being there — for Teater, a landscape painting transcends photography in its ability to communicate the story of a particular experience with and within the world.
