When Words Aren't Enough: A Mixed Media Workshop

Some feelings live too deep for words. In this intimate mixed media workshop, we'll use art to do what language can't — to remember, to honor, and to begin to find our way through.
This workshop comes from a personal place. I'm Anastasia Zielinski — a visual artist, arts educator, and owner of Freak'n Art. A few years ago, I moved to Bend to care for my mother in the final chapter of her life. Art became my anchor through that time, and this workshop grew out of that experience. I created it because I know firsthand what it means to need an outlet that goes beyond words.
What to Expect No art experience needed — just an open heart. Using a guided transfer technique, you'll create a personal mixed media piece that celebrates the life of someone you've loved and lost. Every step is led with care, leaving you space to feel whatever comes up.
What to Bring Photo references of your loved one, and anything that holds memory — objects, symbols, a scrap of handwriting, song lyrics, a pressed flower. If it reminds you of them, bring it.
A Safe Space to Feel It All Tanya Hughes (Amulette Studios) an End of Life and transitions Doula be with us throughout the evening — a specialist in compassionate support around loss and the hard conversations that come with it. You won't be alone in this.
Offered twice a year. Space is intentionally limited to keep the experience intimate.
About the Artist
Anastasia Zielinski is a multidisciplinary artist, arts educator, and the founder of Freak'n Art, a community art studio in Bend, Oregon.
She holds a BFA from Pratt Institute and has shown her work nationally and internationally, with site-specific installations across the Pacific Northwest and residencies in Mexico City. She is a 2023 recipient of the Jerry Goldstein Foundation award and has been featured in CREATE! Magazine.
But some of her most meaningful work happens closest to home. After moving to Bend to serve as her mother's primary caretaker at the end of her life, she found art to be her most honest path through grief. That experience is at the heart of When Words Aren't Enough — a mixed media workshop she created for anyone navigating loss, offered twice a year at Freak'n Art in partnership with Tanya Hughes (Amulette Studios) an End of Life and transitions Doula.
She guides every session herself, drawing on both her professional training and her own lived experience of loss. No art background required — only an open heart.
