Bookbinding & Journal Making Workshop
Hand-sewn books for the new year

Date: January 3, 2026
Time: 12:00–5:00 PM

Start the new year by creating books that can hold your ideas, reflections, sketches, and intentions. In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn the fundamentals of hand bookbinding while making multiple functional journals from start to finish.

Together, we’ll explore the basic anatomy of a book, common bookbinding tools, and simple yet versatile binding structures. The primary focus is on learning how a book is constructed, with space to experiment creatively along the way. As time allows, we’ll also touch on ways to personalize and decorate covers using artistic techniques.

Participants will learn two classic hand-sewn bindings:

  • Pamphlet Stitch – a simple and accessible binding to build confidence and understanding

  • Coptic Binding – a more advanced stitch that creates durable, lay-flat books

By the end of the workshop, you’ll have created at least 3–4 handmade journals in a variety of sizes, with the opportunity to make more depending on pace and interest. The class is designed to be flexible, encouraging experimentation and individualized expression.

All tools and materials are provided. If you have special papers, ephemera, or meaningful materials you’d like to incorporate into your journals, feel free to bring them—this is completely optional.

Accessibility is important. If you require mobility, sensory, or learning accommodations, please contact the instructor in advance so the workshop can be adjusted to best support you.
